Inside an Implementation: T-6 Days to Go Live

We are getting close to go live date.  Warehouse has been run roughly through all of the scenarios, but there is still some reluctance to do additional scanning.  Scanning will benefit the whole structure and has been streamlined quite a bit by our team.  Consensus is to go ahead with current business process.  This is mostly thanks to the customers key users working diligently to help train their coworkers and other department heads.

Inside an implemenation: T-9 days to Go Live

Most of the list is finished.  Worked late into the night with IT director and Controller finalizing reports.  Leaving a few things for Monday, and rest of the week to train departments one more time.  Got news from Lanham that they have a new version of their AFP.  Will migrate new version before Monday, since we need a few of the new functionalities.  General comfort level climbing.

Inside an implementation T-10 days to Go Live

Tagged Under : , ,

We are implementing a high tech company, which is scheduled to go live in 10 days.  I am going to blog each day until go live and a few after.

The client has 55 NAV users.  People are getting anxious.  Today we went through a list of items left to be finished.  Half of the list was finished by day end.  We are projecting to finish the rest tomorrow.  All departments have been trained, but retraining has been requested.  Everyone has been urged to go into the demo system and try out their day to day activities.

Warehouse seems to have the least confidence, since they are moving to scanning inbound and outbound product.  Whereas before, no scanning was performed on control points.  We will be focused on increasing the confidence level, of the warehouse.

Going to bed… long day.  More tomorrow.

Item tracking is a thorny field.  You are forced to select between traceability and performance.  If you aspire to get too much, it will bite you back.

Back to basics in reporting

Tagged Under : , , , , , ,

When it comes to reporting in almost any ERP, there is a world of choices.  Any report tool that can speak ODBC, can communicate with any database that speaks ODBC, which is most of databases today.

When I am asked about reporting in Dynamics NAV, I usually rattle off: SSRS, JetReports, Crystal Reports, FRx and Targit.  I also emphasize the fact that Dynamics NAV reduces the need for regular reports by making the data easier to access through forms and filters.

Why sales profit reports do not tie

Tagged Under : , ,

A sales price or an invoice amount is easy to track and report on.  Once a sales transaction is done the total amount is the total sale.  That’s it.  But when we look at the cost of that sale in order to arrive to a profit the equation becomes a lot more fuzzy.

If we do not keep our eye on the profit, then there is not much need for a sophisticated ERP.  So let’s dive a little bit into one aspect of costing as it pertains to NAV.

The importance of ISVs in the ERP ecology

Tagged Under : , , ,

The field of ERP is vast and very complicated.  I have been doing this for longer than I care to remember now and am still learning new things, both technical details and broad concepts.  As every person who is involved in technology knows, the ground we stand on changes every minute. Successful Trip to NC

Experience
We recently had a existing customer of NAV call us up and ask us to help them out.  They had bought NAV from a different reseller.  It had taken them a year to implement NAV and now that they were live they had a lot of issues that their current partner was reluctant to help them with.  Talks of lawsuit were in the air.  The deal had been a fixed price deal where the expectations were not managed in the sales process.  The owners were disappointed and the staff was exhausted.  Some departments had seen a 100% turnover. A funny note about Business Notifications

Tagged Under :

I struggle with the usability of being notified via e-mail.  I have been to many companies where people have an excessive amount of e-mails being delivered daily.  I often ask these people how they manage to do anything else but read and answer their e-mails.  The routine answers I get back are either a smile of false importance or (for those who are brutally honest) that they simply read perhaps 5% of the e-mails coming in. When the bank gives you their own exchange rate

We recently had a discussion with one of our customers regarding foreign currency.  The customer has a bank account in US dollars (USD) but has a few customers that they invoice in Canadian Dollars (CAD).  They in turn get payments in Canadian Dollars that they deposit straight into their USD account.
